Whose fault is it?
WHOSE FAULT IS IT
Recently in our country we have seen a lot of cases or rather accusations whereby men are said to have raped, murdered or assaulted women. The women being their wives, girlfriends, sisters, mothers etc. Most of these cases never get anywhere because our justice system is a failure.
Is it our fault that we are getting killed? Is it our fault that we get raped because we wear short skirts and tight pants? Is it our fault that we get assaulted because we can’t ‘supposedly’ defend ourselves like men can? These are the questions the we as women constantly ask ourselves, but I guess we will never really get the answers.
On the 14th of February, valentine’s day 2013, 0scar Pistorius killed his girlfriend, River Steenkamp because he thought that she was an intruder. Oscar was then sentenced to 6 years in prison even though the minimum sentence for murder in south Africa is 15 years.

On the first of May 2018, a few days ago, a 1st year Tshwane University of Technology was stabbed and was forced to take off her clothes. All this took place inside the campus while the girl was studying. As a TUT student, I don’t feel safe anymore. I fear for my life and the lives of all the other girls. The boy, like all the other rapists should get sentenced and denied bail because we don’t need these kind of people in our society.
Although Karabo Mokoena and River Steenkamp got their rightful justice, there are lots of other women out here who were murdered, assaulted and raped but their cases get ignored. It is a matter of who is more famous or who has the most money in our country. Normal people don’t get justice because they don’t have the money or they are not famous enough. I would march up to the high court and plea with the magistrate but I would probably be thrown or arrested because I’m not the daughter of a minister.
They tell us not to take the law into our own hands meanwhile they sit in their nice houses and do nothing to protect and help us. They go on TV and tell us to stay calm and not cause a scene only to protect their statuses. It is true when they say that money gets you everything.
